Why You Should Use Annual Leave and How to Make the Most of It

Annual Leave: Here’s Why You Should Take It – and How to Make the Best Use of It.

Posted: October 24 2023

We’re in the midst of the holiday season, but instead of sipping drinks on the beach, climbing in the mountains, and enjoying everything that life has to offer, a startling number of individuals are hesitant to take time off from work.

It is necessary to spend time away from work in order to enjoy our lives fully, yet there are various factors that can discourage us from taking yearly leave. Some people are skeptical that taking time off will result in complete psychological detachment from work. They are encouraged to continue working because they are afraid that ideas of work may enter their heads.

These feelings, which are prevalent among persons who are obsessively devoted about their job, can become oppressive, directing their thoughts and making them unable to temporarily forget about work.

Another reason people do not take vacations is that they aren’t expecting to feel comfortable when on vacation.

This could be due to their circumstances or decisions regarding how to spend their time off. Family vacations may be extremely stressful, sometimes even more so than work. It’s not unexpected that many people prefer to stay at work rather than taking vacation.

On the other hand, some people are concerned about the cost of taking yearly leave. Holidays are expensive, especially for large families, therefore many people decline to take their vacation time to save money.

These are just a few of the reasons why people dread taking vacations, but regardless of the cause, taking time off – especially from stressful occupations – has immediate benefits in terms of reducing stress and burnout. These advantages are just transitory, as stress levels generally rise again immediately after returning to work. As a result, taking regular breaks throughout the year can assist attain the cumulative health benefits of yearly leave.

The good news is that taking a week to two weeks off is enough time to heal and experience a surge of happy feelings. This will begin to drop when the vacation period ends, but it will still provide the needed break to replenish your batteries.

Annual leave is also helpful to employers because it increases employee productivity by up to 40%, reduces sick leave by 28%, and promotes creative and mental health. Taking time apart is also important for parents, as their children benefit greatly from spending more time together.

Making the Most of Your Annual Leave

While these stats may have you reaching for your phone to look for package discounts, the increase in travel interruption this summer may deter you from looking for the most remote destination. However, expensive international vacations are not required to enjoy annual leave. Here are three vacation activities that can boost your happiness, whether you’re on vacation or at home:

Relaxation exercises:

Simple breathing exercises can help lessen anxiety during relaxation. Meditation practises such as mindfulness, for example, can provide similar advantages.

Spend time outside and connect with nature.

When on vacation, aim to spend as much time as possible in nature because it has been linked to improved emotional and psychological wellness. It doesn’t matter what you do to appreciate nature; you can be active by walking, running, gardening, or simply resting on a park bench or stargazing.

Challenge yourself by learning new things!

Use your vacation time to pursue your hobbies. Plan to read a few novels over the holiday if you enjoy reading. According to research, these activities benefit our thoughts and moods regardless of age. There are additional benefits to assisting your children in reading throughout the summer.

In addition, if you prefer listening to music, now is the time to pull out your CDs, Vinyl, or reorganise your digital music library. To improve your physical and mental health, share music, play an instrument, write lyrics, dance, or simply listen to as much music as you can.

These are just a few suggestions.

What matters most is that you do something that stimulates your mind, allows you to forget about your job, and gives you a break before returning to work feeling happier and more energetic than before.
