Ways to Combat a Sedentary Lifestyle
It might be challenging to maintain regular movement as the days become shorter and the temperature drops. It is simple to understand why 55% of Australian adults and 70% of children aged 2–17 do not reach the required national physical activity standards when these factors are combined with desk work, a reliance on cars, and the convenience of screens.
Sadly, being inactive can have negative effects.

Silent Killer: Physical Inactivity
A silent killer might be physical inactivity. Your body uses very little energy while sitting or lying down. This lack of physical exercise might increase the risk of chronic disorders like type 2 diabetes, hypertension (high blood pressure), fatty liver, and several malignancies, including bowel and breast cancers, as well as obesity and linked ailments. In fact, second only to smoking, physical inactivity is the cause of more than 6% of cancer cases in Australia.
On the other hand, regular exercise can lower your risk of contracting a number of ailments (although not eliminate it, given genetics and other factors also play a role). Exercise is crucial for controlling illnesses like type 1 and type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). It is recommended treating these diseases with a multifaceted strategy, prescription movement in addition to any other necessary medical measures (like other lifestyle interventions or medication for instance).
Together with the physical effects, many of patients are unaware of the advantages of regular exercise for their mental health. According to research, even one hour of exercise per week can assist the brain fight depression, and regular exercise can regulate stress and enhance the quality of one’s sleep at night.
Incorporating More Activities in Your Daily Life
When it comes to exercise, every little bit counts. Although the recommendations call for 30 minutes of moderate activity most days, remember that three 10-minute sessions will still get you to your goal.
Start small and move slowly, then. Look for chances to move your body. Before school, have a dance party with your kids or jump on the trampoline with them. Squat for 10 minutes when you first wake up, then take a 10-minute walk after lunch. Consider times when you can walk to the store rather than taking the car or the public transportation. All of it adds up!
Finding a form of movement, you enjoy is essential as well, whether it be a YouTube Pilates session on your bed or joining a sports team, so you’re inspired to keep doing it.
Be aware of what you’re doing during the other 23 and a half hours of the day even if you are engaging in the appropriate amount of physical activity. Long durations of sitting can have potentially harmful effects, therefore attempt to limit or break up lengthy periods of sitting by following the Department of Health and Aged Care’s recommendations.
The less time you spend sitting, the better. If you can make a phone call while walking or use a standing desk to occasionally do some squats, it will be worthwhile.
Promoting an Active Lifestyle to Children
It’s important to urge your children to be active because two out of three youngsters aren’t moving as much as they should.
Participate and make exercise enjoyable. As a family, walk or ride a scooter to school; plan active weekend or vacation activities like trampolining, sports camps, hikes, and beach sessions; and walk, scoot, or ride a bike to a fun playground (a bonus double dose of exercise, counting the journey and the play session).
Childhood behaviours that children form can last a lifetime. You and your family can enjoy the benefits of an active lifestyle and reduce the risks of a sedentary one by setting an example of healthy exercise.
